Auction Fees

Castner's has always felt that an honest commission was the fairest way to charge for selling items at auction. This commission is usually based on both the quantity and quality of items consigned. The fee structure can be either a straight percentage for the entire lot or a variable rate based on the individual price of each selling unit. For items of high value a variable rate is best, with commissions ranging as low as 10%. For most complete household sales a rate of 25% is common.

With either fee structure, the following is included: marketing and advertising; sorting; setup and display; clerking and cashiering; photography (if used); and posting the sale on the Internet. Trucking done by our company is assessed at an hourly rate and deducted from the gross sale. As you can see, our rates are reasonable and straightforward.

Regular consignors are frequently offered discounts. Commissions may vary due to amount of goods sold and lot value per item. Most of our work, however, is for those moving out of the area and estates.

We accept almost all items for auction, although our minimum bid price is $10. Items with estimated prices lower than $10 will be combined in lots for convenience of sale in order to achieve a $10 opening bid. Items which do not receive opening bids are placed in a lot with the following number or discarded. Any cost of removal shall be borne by the consignor.

On occasion, we are asked to bid for the opportunity to conduct government sales, such as for a government agency or bankruptcy court. This we do on a case by case basis.

We also receive numerous calls to sell jewelry, coins, and other items "sent through the mail." This we will do with the stipulation that items are sold on our terms, without reserve, and with a signed contract on file guaranteeing ownership. Please call for our special consignment contract.

Appraisal Fees

Our appraisal charges are based on an ethical hourly rate--not a percentage of value or per item. Charges are based on time and expenses. Some appraisals have few, if any, expenses (travel, research, photographs, etc.). Other appraisals concern only one item but impose considerable expense due to the nature of the item (research, authentication, quality photography, etc.).

Estimates are provided at the outset and a retainer is required in the amount of 50% of the final estimated bill. Court fees must be paid in advance, at our listed rates. A current rate schedule is available upon request.

Remember...you get what you pay for. That's just as true with services as it is with products. When it demands the best, call the best!
